Beachgoers' ability to identify rip currents at a beach in situ

چکیده

Abstract. Rip currents (“rips”) are the leading cause of drowning on surf beaches worldwide. A major contributing factor is that many beachgoers unable to identify rip currents. Previous research has attempted quantify beachgoers' identification ability using photographs without identifying whether this usefully translates into an a current in situ at beach. This study first compare and beach New Zealand (Muriwai Beach) where channel was present. Only 22 % respondents were able current. The highest rates success for males (33 %), residents (25 local users (29 %). Of all who successful situ, 62 active surfers/bodyboarders, 28 swimmers. two photographs, only 34 translate identification, which suggests by worse than reported previous studies involving photographs. highlights difficulty successfully reality not necessarily useful means teaching individuals It advocates use more immersive realistic education strategies, such as virtual headsets showing moving imagery (videos) order improve ability.

Detecting and Visualizing Rip Current Using Optical Flow

Rip current are fast moving and narrow currents that are strongest near the beach. They are dangerous not only for novice but also experienced swimmers. Once caught in the current, the flow of the water pulls the person away from the beach. Many people in panic try to swim against the current and end up drowning due to exhaustion since these currents are usually faster than the speed at which o...

Contact with beach sand among beachgoers and risk of illness.

Recent studies of beach sand fecal contamination have triggered interest among scientists and in the media. Although evidence shows that beach sand can harbor high concentrations of fecal indicator organisms, as well as fecal pathogens, illness risk associated with beach sand contact is not well understood. Beach visitors at 7 US beaches were enrolled in the National Epidemiological and Environ...

Rip Currents Onshore Submarine Canyons

The long-term goals of this research are to understand the dynamics of rip currents generated by largescale variations in alongshore pressure gradients and wave forcing, and the impact of rip currents on nearshore bathymetry. These goals will be accomplished collaboratively using field observations and numerical models, and will be pursued as part of the Nearshore Canyon Experiment (NCEX) sched...

Surf zone diffusivity on a rip-channeled beach

[1] Absolute and relative diffusivity are measured on a rip-channeled beach using 30 position-tracking drifters released in clusters (4–12 drifters) deployed on 7 days with different wave forcing and tidal elevations at Sand City, Monterey Bay, California. Diffusivity and dispersion were found to be larger on days with rip current flow patterns and larger waves. Rip currents cause material to d...
